Be-You-tifully Fit: Overcoming Fear

The good, bad and the ugly about pushing passed fears… You’re growing!  You’re terrified!  You’re sure you look out of place and are crazy self conscious.  That pretty much sums up the last seven weeks of triathlon training.  Thankfully I have a super knowledgeable and kind coach (IG @theunbreakableangel)  that is spoon feeding me what to do and how to do it!

To break all that down further… I haven’t swam laps in about 15 years.  I have a fear of heights which also translates to a fear of depths, so yes a 9 foot deep end in a pool freaks me out.  Seriously…it’s a sport that if you stop doing it, you could die. After dragging my feet a crazy amount, one of my best friends dragged me to the pool.  She was a swimmer and definitely encouraged me passed my insecurities.  You can’t get better if you don’t do it.  After the first time, I went with her I was able to try on my own later in the week.  Slowly I will overcome.

Biking…so that saying “it’s just like riding a bike”…that’s true until you’re sitting high up on a road bike which is nothing like the normal bikes you’re used to.  Thankfully, another one of my best friends lent me her bike until I was able to find my own.  The first couple rides were pretty tough.  I seriously thought being a runner that the burn in my quads would not happen as much as it did but I was very wrong.

The run.  There is where my comfort zone is.  It’s the end of the race and honestly I am completely thrilled about it.  Coming off of a bike into a run is definitely best described by my coach as newborn baby giraffe…she is sure right with that!  But this is my strength.  My safe place.  I know how to run, how to breathe, how to endure.

In less than a month, I will be taking on a triathlon.  Some thing I mistakenly said never to.  It’s become one of my mantras to repeat over and over…”never say never”.  Here’s to overcoming fears and becoming more than I could have dreamed of being.
